The Wolf Pack clan: Ventrilo Tutorial

Depending upon which game you play with WolfPack will affect what form of voice communications you will use within the clan. The Ventrilo server we use is a Game Arena (GA) server and to the best of our knowledge no download usage from this server is taken into account with monthly download limit if you are a BigPond customer. WolfPack deliberatly moved to a GA Ventrillo server to make it fair for all members of the clan.

Quick Start Information

This quick start information is for people that already know how to set up and use ventrilo

  1. Hostname/IP:144.140.154.11
  2. Port Number: 3784
  3. Room:clans/WolfPack
  4. Password: This will be game independant and this is only shown to registered WolfPack members

Puppy Help

Do not take offence to the name "Puppy Help" - we all need help when starting off and are new to something.

Scope

After reading this tutorial you should be able to set up and use Ventrilo for WolfPack.

It will also offer a large resource of information on how to trouble shoot problems that you may have (Thanks to all the WolfPack members for offering their feedback when they had problems!)

Assumptions

The assumptions of this tutorial are the following:

  • You know how to:
    • Install software
    • Plug your microphone into your sound card
  • You have:
    • All the proper administrator priveledges for your computer
    • Your parents permission to make changes to the computer/use a microphone (if you not old enough)
  • You are:
    • Using Windows XP (Home or Pro Edition)
  • You can:
    • Read past all my spelling errors...

Steps

  1. Download the latest Ventrilo "CLIENT" from the Ventrilo website http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php At the time of this tutorial making the client was "Windows i386 - 32bit 2.3.0 ".

  2. After downloading and installing the Ventrilo software run the application (it should be in your "Start button -> Programs -> Ventrilo"). The following screen should appear:

  3. Create a new user name click the button that looks like this "->" next to the "User Name" drop down box. The following screen will appear:

  4. Click the "New" button, and enter your Gaming handle into the box and click "OK"

  5. Leave all the other fields blank and click "OK"

  6. Add new server by click the button that looks like this "->" next to the "Server" drop down box. The following screen will appear:

  7. Type into the box "Bigpond" Click "OK"

  8. Type in the Hostname or IP, Port, Password and Default Channel. Then click "OK"

    The information in the image might be wrong - see the quick start information for the correct details.

  9. Ventrilo is now set up for your user - we just need to configure a few items

  10. Press the "Setup" button

    In the top right hand corner of setup under the "Voice" tab, there is 2 check boxs above "Input" and "Output" devices, named "Use DirectSound" make sure both boxs are ticked!

    On the left hand side of the same tab, tick the "Use Push-To-Talk Hotkey" and where it says "Hot Key" click in with your mouse and press the key you wish to use when you want to talk - I recommend the left "Alt" key on your keyboard.

    Under amplifiers drag both the "Inbound" and "Outbound" sliders up to 10 (like in the image below)

    You will adjust these settings later when you get more used to the software

  11. Select the "Events" tab(next to the "Voice" tab)

    Change all the drop down boxs to "Nothing"

  12. Select the "Misc" tab

    Tick "Minimize to System tray"

    Untick "Auto expand all channels when connecting"

    Click "OK" and get out of set up

    NOTE: Always remember if you are in the set up menu Ventrilo will NOT allow you to speak! You must get out of set up in order to talk!

  13. Ventril is now set up and configured! Click the "Connect" button. You should appear in the Wolf Pack Room.

    Note: If a error message appears stating "Error swapping rooms - incorrect password". Double click on "Clans" and then scroll down untill you find a room labelled "Wolf Pack" double click on that room and enter the password when asked.

Trouble Shooting

F.A.Q

  1. The ventrilo download site is not working, is there a mirror?
  2. I can hear other members but they cannot hear me, What can I do about this?
    • There is a number of possible problems that could be causing this - We will start with the most common - move through the numbers 1 by 1 as they have been done this way in order to eliminate problems.
      1. Unplugged Microphone (have you plugged the microphone into the right port of the sound card? Pink is the industry standard colour for microphones - apparently) So plug your microphone into the pink port of your sound card.

      2. On your start bar located near the clock in the right hand corner of the screen (usually located in the right hand corner of the screen) you will see a little speaker that looks like this (if there is no speaker in the corner of your screen see the Microsoft Knowledge Base acticle) Double click the speaker and it will bring up your sound volume control

        1. Option -> Properties

        2. Scroll down the list and tick microphone and click ok.
          Tick the"Mute" box under microphone.

        3. The microphone will appear and the must button SHOULD be ticked and the level indicator halfway up

        4. Go back to Options -> Properties
        5. Under Adjust volum for - Select "Recording" - tick microphone and click OK
        6. Make sure "Select" is ticked and and the level indicator is half way up

        7. Return back to "Adust volume for playback" (see 2 steps up for information on how to) Click on "Options" -> "Advanced Controls" Click "Advanced" under microphone and (if available) tick "1 + Microphone +boost"

        8. After you have tried the above steps get out of the volume control - this should have fixed the problem
      3. Make sure you have defined a "hot key" in set up for push to talk. See the configuration section on this tutorial.
  3. Is there any authoritive links you can provide? Yes but why? do you not trust this tutorial?
  4. Where do I get the password from for the private room?
    • Visit the forums - do not give out the password to anyone else, let them get it off the forums.
  5. Ventrilo will not connect - it keeps counting down where the connect button was.
    • This is means that ventrilo is trying to connect to the Ventrilo server, it just cannot, so its counting down and automatically trying to reconnnect - leave it and it will automatically rejoin. This is not a problem with your computer and set up - it is the server you are trying to connect too is full.
